A limited test proposal by the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) to make airport concessions (restaurants and shopping) more accessible to the non-traveling public is running into resistance from the Association of Corporate Travel Executives (ACTE). According to a statement issued by association President Greeley Koch, opening up airport terminals to the non-traveling public – for the purpose of shopping, eating in restaurants, or meeting passengers – will add to security lines and delays currently experienced by business travelers.

It is incongruous that the TSA would consider such a proposal in light of heightened security concerns and issues with long security lines, said Koch. I understand that airport authorities, especially those with highly developed mall-type terminals, are anxious about maximizing their returns from concession leases, but this must be secondary to the primary purpose of the airport – a safe, secure, and speedy terminus for travelers.

Published reports state that the TSA is exploring this proposal at two airports: Dallas/Fort Worth and Detroit Metro. Gate privileges will be extended to guests staying at hotels attached to these airports. Guest must pass through security check points, and have their identities compared to current watch lists. Though limited to these two airports, it was reported that the TSA may expand this concept to other non-travelers.

While security procedures at the gate are greatly improved, they have not been enhanced to the point where they are absolutely foolproof,` said Koch. This new TSA proposal will increase the odds – simply by increasing the numbers – of people passing through the gate and possibly slowing down the movement of people to their destinations. We have been told there is an immediate need to reduce gate congestion and free up security facilities to run more exhaustive searches on potential risks, yet this proposal adds to both without benefiting the real traveler, said Koch.
