The Meetings Industry Association (MIA) has elected Michael Scroop as the new Chairman of the UK association at its Annual General Meeting and Lunch held on 27th February in London. In his opening address to members Michael said; “During my term as Chairman, I will focus on continuing to modernise the association, to ensure that we continue to fully reflect the needs of our members and to widen the appeal and benefits of the MIA to the widest possible audience.”

The audience at the AGM, which was held at Savoy Place in London, were also told that a total of 74 new members had joined the association during the past year, a growth of over 20%, and that revenues were increasing at a steady rate.

David Hornby, commercial director of Visit London, addressed the members with an exciting presentation on the prospects for the meetings industry as London looked forward to hosting the 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games.

Michael concluded by saying; “When our nation hosts the Olympic Games, the evidence from past Host Cities, and my personal experience of Sydney 2000, shows that staging the Games can provide an enormous economic boost. We must therefore capitalise on this opportunity and that’s where I see the MIA’s role – to support its members and the industry at large to maximise that benefit.”
