The Kansas Department of Commerce will provide seven projects a combined total of $120,350 in Attraction Development Grant funding, with the recipients investing a total of $357,726 toward the projects.

“We are pleased to support these new initiatives in Kansas,” said Travel & Tourism Director Becky Blake. “As travellers continue to seek new and exciting adventures, it is important that we do everything we can to assist the Kansas tourism industry and continue to make our state a destination for tourists. The Attraction Development Grant Program is a wonderful tool to help potential tourism destinations become a reality and maximize their potential.”

The purpose of the Attraction Development Grant Program is to assist the development of dynamic, authentic experiences that encourage significant numbers of travellers to visit Kansas. Grant funds may be used for a variety of activities necessary to expand the tourism product base or to develop new tourist attractions. The grant funds up to 40% of a project, with the community or business funding the remaining 60%.

The recipients are as follows:

Greater Kansas City Sports Commission – Wyandotte County

Grant funds will be used to assist with the cost of the entertainment at the 2007 Race Fest at the Kansas Speedway. The Race Fest is held in conjunction with the ARCA/ReMax auto race.

Black Jack Battle Field Trust – Douglas County

Black Jack Battlefield is a historically significant site for the Frontier Freedom National Heritage Area. Funds will be used to develop the interpretive plan and support the application for National Landmark Status.

City of Olathe, Mahaffie Stagecoach Stop & Farm Historic Site – Johnson County

A heritage visitor centre is being constructed as an enhancement to the Mahaffie Stagecoach Stop & Farm Historic attraction. Grant funds will support the design and fabrication of the orientation exhibit within the centre. The stagecoach stop and farm has actively participated in the Freedom Frontier National Heritage effort.

William Inge Festival Foundation – Montgomery County

The annual William Inge Festival is a unique Kansas event that attracts out-of-state visitors. Grant funds will assist with marketing for the 2007 and 2008 festivals.

Symphony in the Flint Hills, Inc. – Wabaunsee County

High Plains Camping, Inc. – Thomas County

The goal of High Plains Camping, Inc. is to increase the annual number of RV Rally events through marketing efforts. Refurbishment of the Sunflower Barn Social Hall will provide a facility for the rally’s social events. Attendees at RV rallies spend at least three days at the rally. While at the rally, the attendees will visit businesses and attractions in the area. Intent of the grant funding is to enhance the rally attendees experience at the park, thus increasing return visits and word-of-mouth endorsements.
