EL AL, the national airline of Israel, launched the first nonstop flight from Miami to Tel Aviv with the help of the Miami Fire & Rescue Department and the Miami-Dade Aviation Department. Two fire trucks parked on the runway gave the flight a memorable send-off, as they blasted arcs of water over the aircraft.

At an earlier ribbon-cutting ceremony, remarks were made by Michael Mayer, General Manager of North and Central America, EL AL Israel Airlines; who stated that as a direct result of these nonstop flights, EL AL expects a 30% increase in traffic from the Southeast region to Israel this year and plans to increase the frequency of the nonstop service in the future. Dr. Yitschak Bed Gad, Consul General of Israel and Bruce Drum, Miami-Dade Aviation Department Deputy Director of Operations also participated in the ribbon-cutting ceremony.

EL AL now offers the only nonstop service from Miami twice weekly (Tuesday and Thursday), the most nonstop flights from New York (JFK/Newark), and the only direct service from Los Angeles and Chicago. From the U.S., EL AL codeshares with Delta Airlines and offers special fares from 48 additional cities.
