The United States and India on Thursday started talks on an Open Skies accord, with an aim to accommodate the booming flow of passengers and goods between the two countries.
Our goal is to do more than shake the cobwebs off a half-century-old agreement, said US Transportation Secretary Norman Mineta while meeting with visiting Indian Civil Aviation Minister Praful Patel. We need to replace it, he added.
The new agreement will provide a win-win situation for both countries, said Patel.
Under the current agreement, which was signed in 1965, the number of flights between the two countries is limited, and most of passengers are transported through third-country airlines.
An Open Skies accord would allow unrestricted airline service from both countries to, from and beyond each other`s territory.
According to Mineta, the agreement could be reached within one month and it does not require approval from the US congress.
