Organisers of Greece's annual Philoxenia<.> travel and tourism exhibition say this year's event will be even bigger and better than that of 1999.

In its 16th year, the international fair is being organised by HELEXPO and will again be staged at the Thessaloniki Exhibition Centre, between November 2 and 5.

Philoxenia, held under the auspices of the Hellenic Tourism Organisation (EOT), is expected to be much-improved while a series of interesting seminars will be held, one of which will discuss the promotion of convention organisation and be hosted by the Thessaloniki Convention Visitors Bureau.

Last year's event surpassed all previous records, featuring 530 exhibitors over an area spanning 9,016 square metres.

Philoxenia 2000 will cover a total area of 20,000 sq.m. and, so far, 90% of the space has been booked. State tourism bodies, state- and privately-owned airlines, shipping companies, travel agents, hotels including Louis Hotels and Best Western, hotel equipment suppliers, car hire agencies, tour bus companies and members of the press will feature at the fair.

In addition, Mauritius, Egypt, Bulgaria, Spain, Cyprus, Romania, Thailand and Tunisia have confirmed they will also participate. The European Travel and Trade Fairs Association and the Association of British Travel Agents, which is to stage its annual conference on Kos island next month, have also booked stands.

In a first for Philoxenia, HELEXPO will be cooperating with the online travel industry publication Travel Daily News in the production of the TDN-Philoxenia Daily 2000. News of the fair will appear daily in this online newspaper.

The first two days of the fair is restricted to trade visitors while the last two will be open to the general public, who shall be able to visit stands and gain information on holiday destinations.
