October tHPI: Cardiff hotel prices up 161% for Rugby League World Cup

After increasing dramatically in September, European hotel prices have fallen by an average of 7 per cent this month. Based on the 50 most popular European destinations on trivago, one night in October will cost an average of £103, compared to £110 in September.

Hotel prices in Cardiff have increased by 161 per cent for the 2013 Rugby League World Cup, according to the trivago Hotel Price Index (tHPI) reported monthly by hotel comparison website trivago.co.uk. The first match of the tournament is between England and Australia at Cardiff’s Millennium Stadium on Saturday 26th October. An overnight stay will cost an average of £227, which is a 161 per cent increase from the monthly average of £87 per night.

Hotel prices have also increased on the day preceding the match. An overnight stay on Friday 25th October will cost an average of £163, which is an 87 per cent increase from the monthly average. On the day following the match, hotel prices will decrease by an average of 68 per cent to £72 per night.

The 2013 Rugby League World Cup is hosted by England and Wales, with matches also held in France and Ireland.  It is likely hotel prices will increase in other locations as the tournament progresses throughout November, in particular for the semi-finals and final. These will be held at London’s Wembley Stadium and Manchester’s Old Trafford, on Saturday 23rd November and Saturday 30th November respectively.

European Hotel Prices Decrease Compared to September
After increasing dramatically in September, European hotel prices have fallen by an average of 7 per cent this month. Based on the 50 most popular European destinations on trivago, one night in October will cost an average of £103, compared to £110 in September.

The most significant decreases can be found in Nice (down an average of 26 per cent to £93 per night), Amsterdam (down 21 per cent to £135 per night) and Milan (down 20 per cent to £127 per night). After increasing dramatically for Oktoberfest, hotel prices have fallen by an average of 19 per cent in Munich to £146 per night. In the UK, hotel prices have decreased in Brighton (down 14 per cent to £91 per night) and Edinburgh (down 13 per cent to £112 per night).

Hotel prices have risen slightly in comparison to this time last year. The most significant year-on-year increases can be found in the German cities of Cologne (up an average of 29 per cent to £127 per night) and Frankfurt (up 20 per cent to £122 per night).

Best Value Destinations October
For October sun, Greek destinations present the best value for money this month. One night on the North Aegean Islands will cost an average of £44 and one night on Crete will cost an average of £59. Following these are Portugal’s Algarve at an average of £63 per night and Spain’s Andalusia at £66 per night.

October is renowned for the city break. Hotel prices have decreased across Europe this month, with the best value found in Bulgaria’s capital Sofia (average of £55 per night). Following Sofia is Spain’s Zaragoza (£57 per night), Latvia’s Riga (£60 per night) and Spain’s Valencia (£63 per night).
