At the end of the first quarter of the calendar year, the Canadian hotel development pipeline includes 224 projects comprising 25,793 rooms, according to the March 2009 STR/TWR/Dodge Construction Pipeline Report released this week. This represents a 1.1-percent decrease in the number of rooms in the pipeline compared to February 2009 and a 3.6-percent increase in the number of rooms in the pipeline compared to March 2008.
The number of rooms in the total active pipeline experienced double-digit, year-over-year increases in four of the seven segments in the chain-scale segments. The Luxury segment increased 23.4 percent to 1,132 rooms total in the active pipeline. The Upper Upscale segment increased 24.5 percent to 2,654 total rooms in the active pipeline. The Midscale with Food and Beverage segment increased 74.0 percent to 2,015 and the Economy segment increased 22.8 percent to 603 total rooms in the active pipeline.
