MOSCOW – Aeroflot has taken delivery of a new A320 equipped with aerodynamic wing-tips known as Sharklets, becoming the first Russian airline to operate the latest modification from Airbus. The aircraft has been named in honour of Alexander Butlerov, a nineteenth century Russian chemist and creator of the theory of chemical structure of organic substances.
Sharklets are the new enhanced wing-tips for the A320 family that improve aerodynamics and reduce operating costs. The main advantage of their use is a reduction of fuel consumption (up to 4 per cent, according to Airbus), an increased range and improved takeoff performance. In addition, operating such aircraft reduces the level of harmful CO2 and NOx emissions. Sharklets are made of composite materials; they are 2.4 m high and their shape resembles shark fins.
Aeroflot CEO Vitaly Saveliev said: “Aeroflot’s fleet is the best in Russia and one of the most modern in Europe. Continuing to modernize and strengthen our fleet is a top priority as we respond to growth in our markets and execute on our strategic development plans.”
