Airports in the Aena network close August with a recovery of 92.6% of passengers compared to the same month in 2019

Over 27.3 million travellers passed through its facilities. 223,260 aircraft were in operation and 78,468 tonnes of cargo were transported.

Airports in the Aena network closed August 2022 with 27,301,674 passengers. This figure is 7.4% shy of pre-pandemic levels, meaning that 92.6% of the traffic recorded in August 2019 has already been recovered.

In addition, 223,260 aircraft were in operation, which is equivalent to a recovery of 95.1% compared to 2019, while 78,468 tonnes of cargo were transported, representing a decrease of 6.3% compared to the same month of 2019.

Of the total number of travellers recorded in August, 27,236,102 were commercial passengers, of which 18,429,626 travelled on international flights, 12.7% less than in August 2019. Meanwhile, 8,806,476 passengers travelled on domestic flights, which is 6.3% more than before the pandemic. In the cumulative period up to the eighth month of 2022, a recovery of 85.3% of passenger traffic was reached compared to the same period of 2019. From January to August 2022, 159,308,824 travellers passed through airports in the Aena network, 1,477,464 aircraft movements were recorded (7.7% less than in 2019) and 651,950 tonnes of cargo were transported, which is 3% less than in the same period of 2019.

Passengers
Adolfo Suárez Madrid-Barajas Airport recorded the highest number of passengers in the eighth month of the year, with 4,985,968, representing a decrease of 13.9% compared with August 2019. It is followed by Barcelona-El Prat Josep Tarradellas Airport, with 4,464,875 (-17.5% compared to 2019); Palma de Mallorca Airport, with 4,161,847 (-2.8%); Málaga-Costa del Sol Airport, with 2,053,341 (-6.9%); Alicante-Elche Airport, with 1,512,008 passengers (-10.6%); Ibiza Airport, with 1,361,379 (-1.1%); and Gran Canaria Airport, with 1,090,494 passengers, representing an increase of 0.8% compared to the same month of 2019.

Operations
As for the number of aircraft in operation, the airport with the highest number in August was Adolfo Suárez Madrid-Barajas Airport, with a total of 31,575 (-15% compared to 2019), followed by Palma de Mallorca Airport, with 28,838 (+0.2%); Barcelona-El Prat Josep Tarradellas Airport, with 27,779 flights (-15%); Málaga-Costa del Sol Airport, with 15,159 (-3.1%); Ibiza Airport, with 12,827 (+4.6%); Gran Canaria Airport, with 9,910 (-6.6%); and Alicante-Elche Airport, with 9,795 aircraft movements, representing a decrease of 8.9% compared to the same month of 2019.
