Tours specifically aimed at satisfying Chinese tourists` special interests are in the offing for Phuket Island and its environs, following meetings between Chinese business interests and media with provincial officials here.

A group of business executives and media from China, led by Chairman Guo Dongjie of China Comfort Travel Group Co. Ltd, met with Phuket Governor Udomsak Assavarangkura to discuss plans to promote visits — and `re-visits` — by their fellow countrymen who`d like to make their southern Thailand stay more than a `once in a lifetime` experience.

Encouraging repeat visits to Thailand`s world-renowned tourist destination is a top goal of the group, assessing ways to counter negative impressions of Phuket`s as a satisfying destination following last year`s tsunami.

The Chinese delegation asked about the province`s measures to restore its once-thriving tourist industry, after the devastating disasters along the six Andaman Sea shorelines of Thailand.

The 80 per cent drop in the number of Chinese tourists, is a phenomena that must be countered, according to Chinese tour operators, who have developed a liking for Thailand in general and Phuket

in particular.

Governor Udomsak suggested China open more chartered flights, besides those of China Airline, to bring tourists back to Phuket . He invited relatives of those killed by the tidal waves to attend a memorial anniversary of the event later this year.
