As part of the World Tourism Organization’s Tsunami and Crisis Relief Action Plan WTO, a Seminar on Positioning, Re-Positioning and Image Recovery, will be taking place in Bali on 10 and 11 December 2005. The Seminar is jointly organized by the World Tourism Organization, through its Education, Training and Knowledge Management Department and the WTO. Themis Foundation, and the Ministry of Culture and Tourism of Indonesia, with the generous financial contribution of the donor country, Andorra.

Aimed at providing effective proposals and recommendations on the re-positioning and image recovery of tourism in Bali, taking into account the experience, knowledge and views of key decision-makers, the two-day seminar will be an inter-active exercise involving all players from the public sector at central and local level, industry leaders representing the hospitality, tour operator, travel agency, transport, entertainment sectors, destination management organizations and educators.

To lead the Seminar, WTO is providing an experts team made up of Mr. Raul Peralba, Positioning Expert, Partner-Director for Spain and Portugal of Trout&Partners Group (the world’s leading experts on Positioning), Mr. Michael Fabricius, WTO expert on tourism policy and destination management, Ms. Zoritsa Urosevic, WTO expert on marketing communications, who has worked extensively in Indonesia and Ms. Rosamond Deming, Senior WTO Programme Officer and an expert in project implementation.

The seminar will focus on the concept of positioning, its application to the current situation of tourism in Indonesia and Bali, as well as Bali’s present positioning in the various international markets and will place major emphasis on issues crucial to the re-positioning of Indonesia and Bali.

Bali accounts for 28% of all arrivals to Indonesia in 2004, and 43% of international visitors arrivals in commercial accommodations. If after the bombing in October 2005, arrivals fell by 36.83% (with U.S. and European arrivals less affected), Bali is still a record breaker for 2005: International visitor arrivals January-October 2005 totalled 1,247,867 – a record breaking year-to-date performance for Bali and still 2.1% ahead of last year’s totals for the same period, despite the most recent terror attack.

Considering the importance of tourism for Bali and Indonesia, and the resilience shown, WTO believes that the Seminar on Positioning, Re-Positioning and Image Recovery will be an important step in providing effective proposals and recommendations, essential to ensuring the success and lasting impact of the discussions. As a result Bali will be better prepared to address unexpected events and stretch its resources to bridge the gap between current capabilities and future opportunities.
