Britain too expensive for holidays say holidaymakers

On the Beach survey of 1,000 British holidaymakers found that a massive 41% say they choose to holiday outside of the UK because they believe it's cheaper than taking a holiday at home. The survey revealed that although flights may not be needed for a holiday in the UK, only one in five believe it's cheaper to holiday at home.

A survey conducted by the UK’s leading online beach specialists On the Beach has revealed many British holidaymakers choose to holiday abroad rather than in the UK, because they believe it is cheaper.

The survey of 1,000 British holidaymakers found that a massive 41% say they choose to holiday outside of the UK because they believe it’s cheaper than taking a holiday at home.

Whilst a recent report suggested that last year, 68% of consumers took at least one UK holiday, the On the Beach survey revealed that although flights may not be needed for a holiday in the UK, only one in five believe it’s cheaper to holiday at home.

Furthermore, whilst many would expect the cost of travelling to a UK holiday destination to be less than the cost of travel to a foreign destination, 37% believe the overall cost of a holiday abroad is similar to a holiday in the UK.

Further research from On the Beach shows just why British holidaymakers believe it’s cheaper to holiday abroad. The research showed that a one night stay at The Grand Hotel in Brighton for two people on August 1 on a bed and breakfast basis would cost a whopping £319. Compare that to the cost for a seven night stay at the 4* Mavi Hotel in the Bodrum area of Turkey at just £459 (£65 per night).

Alistair Daly, Chief Marketing Officer at On the Beach comments: “With so many low cost airlines offering great value flights and the low hotel rates offered to British holidaymakers by non-UK hoteliers, a holiday on foreign shores can often be much cheaper than a holiday in the UK. For the UK to compete, there would need to be a complete overhaul in pricing as in many cases, a one night stay in a hotel in a popular UK resort can be more expensive than seven nights abroad.”
