Bermuda is back in business in the wake of Hurricane Florence, the Category 1 hurricane which passed near the island. While the storm was not a direct hit on the island, Hurricane Florence brought heavy rain and sustained winds of 75 to 80 knots, causing some power outage to residences and businesses – the majority of which have been restored. Overall, the island sustained minimal damage.

Bermuda International Airport is scheduled to open. The terminal and the runways will be operational. Passengers are requested to contact their air carriers for further information.

Government Works and Engineering personnel are in the process of cleaning up the roads in Bermuda. All roads are open and passable for traffic. There has been no major erosion to Bermuda’s beaches which are also open.

Hotels are reporting that they are fully functional with only minor debris issues, however, those parties with questions on their accommodations are advised to contact the properties directly.

Cruise Ships are expected to resume their normal operations later this week. The Norwegian Crown and the Norwegian Majesty will make their regular calls this week.

Island holds up well

Bermuda is known to have some of the world’s most comprehensive building codes, which specify that homes must be built with walls at least 8 inches thick, and be able to withstand 150 mph gusts and sustained winds of 110 mph. These codes and the island’s spirit of preparedness play an important role in its ability to safely weather storm conditions.

No tourists were reported injured during the storm and, as the weather cleared to Bermuda’s normal moderate conditions, government personnel began the clean-up process immediately after the storm passed.

According to Bermuda’s Deputy Premier, Dr. the Hon. Ewart F. Brown, JP, MP, “We gratefully appreciate all of the concerns and prayers for us during this storm. We look forward to welcoming all our guests to the island to experience everything Bermuda has to offer. We truly can state that you will feel the love when you arrive.”
