Traffic growth rebounds sharply through June 2004 Geneva, Switzerland – June 2004 results from over 800 airports worldwide show traffic passenger traffic was up 15 percent, cargo 14 percent and movements 5 percent compared to June 2003. For the first half of 2004, passenger traffic was up 13 percent, cargo 10 percent and movements 4 percent over the same period in 2003.

In June 2004, the passenger traffic recovery continued in all regions led by Asia/Pacific (+43 percent), the Middle East (+19 percent), Africa (+15 percent), Latin America/Caribbean (+11 percent), North America (+10 percent) and Europe (+9 percent).

Cargo volume handled rose in Asia/Pacific (+24 percent), Latin America/Caribbean (+15 percent), Africa (+14 percent), Europe and the Middle East (+12 percent each), and North America (+9 percent).

Paul Behnke, ACI`s Director of Economics noted: The strong growth in both passenger traffic and cargo volume — and the fact that it was spread across all regions–is good news for our industry. Indeed, airport and airspace congestion are once again a serious concern in some regions, and we have seen a strong growth in capital expenditure in 2004 as airport operators try prepare for higher traffic volumes.
