Thessaloniki<.> is expecting a rise in tourism traffic this year based on bookings thus far from abroad, the president of the northern port city`s hoteliers` union told a recent press conference.

Speaking on the occasion of the recent launch of the Thessaloniki Convention & Visitors Bureau (TCVB), Vassilios Brovas confirmed that 1999 did turn out to be a positive year for the local tourism industry despite the Yugoslav war and the Ocalan crisis.

Though there were a number of problems at the beginning of 1999, in the final analysis an increase of 2.8 percent in arrivals was recorded. Generous development ministry funding handed to northern Greece`s three hoteliers` unions, to boost domestic tourism, was seen as a major reason for the rise in visitors.
