REPORT – ITALY – PAVIA 2012 CROSSROADS OF EUROPE: "Crossroads of Europe" (June 6th – 10th) is an annual event highlighting places and routes in Europe associated with a coming together of different cultures. It debuts this year in Pavia, Italy (6-10 June) as the first in a series to be hosted at the intersection of different European cultural routes.
400 participants are expected to attend the conference ‘Cultural and Religious Routes’ while up to 800 participants are expected to come to Pavia expressly to visit the stands and exhibition and partake in the cultural events, this is without counting those who will be in the town as for holidays during the high season.
The main aims of event are to:
- Raise awareness on the need for a new kind of tourism, which is slow, respectful of the environment, of the natural and cultural heritage and of the local traditions. In essence, to promote a sustainable model of tourism for Europe. This objective will be achieved with a conference on religious tourism and pilgrimage routes, several thematic workshops, expositions, etc;
- Encourage the integration of SMEs into the tourism sector and to create opportunities for cooperation with tour operators, etc. This objective will be achieved through B2B meetings, guided tours, info sessions and briefings.
"We need to keep Europe’s tourism industry at the forefront of innovative solutions. The concept of cultural routes is such an innovation. It corresponds to a rising demand from tourists to explore other and others’ culture. Cultural routes provide a concrete demonstration of the fundamental principles of Europe and of the European common heritage jumping across borders, transmitting values and culture", said Mr. Antonio Tajani, European Commission Vice President, responsible for Industry and Entrepreneurship, who is going to attend the event.
