Grenada renames its international airport

Point Salines International Airport (PSIA) in Grenada has been renamed Maurice Bishop International Airport (MBIA) in honour of the former Prime Minister, Maurice Bishop, who in 1979 was instrumental in the decision to proceed with the construction of a new airport, which was seen as a pre-requisite for the development of tourism to Grenada.

The airport opened in 1984 and continues to be central to the export of Grenadian agricultural products and manufactured goods, as well as providing easy access for tourists.

During the re-naming ceremony, which was attended by the Prime Minister Tilman Thomas, a new departure lounge was unveiled. Weekly direct flights from the UK to Grenada’s Maurice Bishop International Airport are provided by British Airways, Virgin Atlantic and Monarch Airlines.

The airport code for Grenada, GND remains unchanged.
