In an interview with the weekly newsmagazine Focus, chairman of German airline Lufthansa<.> Juergen Weber said that the airline is not expected to make any profits this year in view of the present crisis in the airline industry.

Reiterating his opposition to state subsidies for ailing airlines in the wake of last month`s attacks in the US, Weber insisted that Lufthansa`s earlier earnings forecasts had been realistic and noted that in the beginning of the year, the carrier had been targeting operating profit of EUR1 billion. In the same article he did say however, that that forecast was subsequently slashed to EUR700 million- EUR750 million in the wake of a pilots` strike. Weber also noted that Lufthansa officials are witnessing income down by 20 percent, which will have to be offset by cutting costs.
