CAIRO. The Mediterranean Travel Fair, MTF<.>, held in Cairo, proved a success. Some 1.200 senior buyers were invited to attend and meet with a host of suppliers during the three day show held in `The Cairo International Conference Center`. The first two days were reserved for buyers and trade professionals, while the last day the show was open to the general public.

The key markets of Egypt, Israel, Palestine, Jordan, Syria, Lebanon, Cyprus, and Turkey, as well as Greece were spotlighted. Both inbound and outbound tourist traffic were promoted.

Greece was well represented notably by stands of the Hellenic National Tourism Organization (EOT) with Olympic Airways, and Elounda Mare Hotels and many agencies. Among the agencies were Travel Plan, Byzantine Travel, Ganymedes Tours, Narita Travel, Aristotle Travel, Boutros Tours, Nina Tours, and of course Pyramis, which handles the largest number of Greeks travelling to Egypt, with well over 5.000 a year.

In addition to 210 Egyptian tourist enterprises, there were 116 exhibitors from 25 countries. Eighty eight counties were represented by visitors.

The American Society of Travel Agents, ASTA, hosted a seminar program focusing on `Technology and Travel Suppliers`.

The World Tourism Organisation, WTO, also hosted an all-day seminar on `The Impact of the Internet and e-mail on the Travel and Tourism Industry`.

At the MTF, Accor Egypt signed an agreement for the management of six new properties in Egypt. Four hotels and two cruise ships. These new properties bring a total of managed properties in Egypt by Accor to 27, located in 12 cities. Accor manages more than 3.000 hotels worldwide (with some 360.000 rooms) and employs seme 125.000 people in 140 countries.
