‘Flurry’ of bookings after best November snowfall in years

Ski Solutions sees booking rise as temperatures plummet and snow comes early.

Tailor-made ski tour operator and travel agent, Ski Solutions is dealing with an ‘avalanche’ of enquiries from enthusiasts desperate to get out on the slopes for a last-minute pre-Christmas break.

The company says it has seen a 17% spike in enquiries in the past week since the weather turned colder and many ski resorts opened early following heavy snow fall.

Tignes, Val Thorens and Alpe D’Huez in France; Obergurgl and Kaprun in Austria and Zermatt and Davos in Switzerland were not due to open until November 30. However, all are operational now, following consistent snow and cold temperatures throughout November which has dumped 50cm in some areas over the last week alone.

Val Thorens, the highest resort in Europe at 2,300m, for example, currently has 60cm of snow at 2,300m and 90cm at 3,200m.

It’s a similar picture in America and Canada, where heavy snow has led Winter Park and Aspen, as well as Whistler and Big White in Canada, to open two weeks earlier than scheduled.

Keen skiers can’t get their salopettes on quick enough and are hitting the Ski Solutions’ web site and phone lines to bag a deal to get them on the slopes.

Ski Solutions Craig Burton says those who can find the time should get out and take advantage of the fantastic early ski conditions.

He says: “This year has got off to a flying start, with the best November snowfall in six years. Skiers haven’t had it so good for a long time and it’s got all the signs of being a great winter.

“Consistent storms throughout November and cold temperatures have laid down a fantastic snow base across much of the Alps. North America too has seen an excellent start to the season, in particular the Canadian resorts of Whistler and Banff, which have all been open for over a week already, and many of the Colorado resorts such as Breckenridge.”

The outlook is also good, with mid-range forecasts suggesting cold temperatures will continue across the Alps into December.

“All in all, it’s a truly fantastic start to the winter season, and demand is high. Ski Solutions has seen a 17% spike in enquiries this week as news of the great snow conditions starts to get out,” adds Craig.

“We’re not yet ‘snowed under’, but all these enquiries are keeping us very busy.”

Craig continues: “There are some good deals for Christmas itself and availability for the pre-Christmas week is also good. Forget the Christmas shopping trip and get out to the Alps for a week instead, for £375 per person in a three-star catered chalet in La Plagne, France.’

“New Year is very booked up now in the best known high-altitude resorts, though with snow conditions looking so good this could be a great year to try some of the more traditional, lower altitude ski villages such as La Clusaz in France and Kitzbuhel in Austria.”
