The Canadian Sport Tourism Alliance (CSTA) and the Tourism Industry Association of Canada (TIAC), in partnership with Western Economic Diversification Canada, are collaborating to host the 2010 Sport and Tourism Forum – Maximizing the Tourism Benefits, being held December 12 – 13, 2005 in Calgary, Alberta.

The CSTA and TIAC co-chair a Steering Committee whose mandate is to establish and guide the successful implementation of action plans that maximize the regional and national the tourism benefits of hosting the 2010 Winter Olympic Games and Paralympic Games in Vancouver-Whistler. The Committee includes both public and private sector sport and tourism interests across Canada.

After initial meetings and discussions, the Steering Committee identified that there are a number of organizations involved in initiatives that could impact the tourism industry leading to 2010 and beyond. The Forum is a platform for these organizations to share information, strategies and individual objectives as they relate to tourism. The Forum’s goal is to synthesize the information presented in order to identify areas of overlap, gaps and opportunities for collaborative action. It also represents an opportunity for Forum participants to familiarize themselves with roles of a variety of public and private sector organizations.

“The Forum is a collaborative initiative between the sport and tourism communities to maximize the benefits of Canada’s hosting the 2010 Winter Olympic and Paralympic Games”, stated Randy Williams, President and CEO of TIAC.

“Economic development through tourism is one of the greatest untapped elements of Canadian sport system”, said Rick Traer, CEO of the CSTA.“This Forum represents an outstanding platform for the continued development of the sport tourism industry in Canada”.

The Forum will feature two keynote speakers: Frank King, President and CEO of the Organizing Committee for the 1988 Winter Olympic Games in Calgary; and John Morse, Managing Director of the Australian Tourism Commission, who supervised the design and implementation of the successful Australian tourism strategy leading to the 2000 Sydney Olympics.
