The Travelers Conservation Foundation– founded by the United States Tour Operators Association to help preserve, conserve and promote responsible use of our world`s natural, cultural and historic treasures, announced that the first three grant recipients for 2004 would be the Eastern Shore Land Conservancy in Maryland, the Historical Society of Princeton, New Jersey, and the Zadar National Museum in Croatia.

Eastern Shore Land Conservancy is devoted to conserving land in the Eastern Shore (MD) region, which is rich in historic sites and stunning biodiversity. Sprawling development has literally been consuming this important wildlife habitat and natural areas. The grant will aid the ESLC in their campaign for the acquisition of 10 acres on Tilghman Island, called Paw Paw Cove. This site is the only remaining sand beach environment on this coast and also features significant archeological sites/artifacts (Paleo Indians).

The grant to the Historical Society of Princeton, New Jersey, will support renovation efforts for the Updike Farm. This is part of a larger program that will restore a historic farm and barn, and will also provide storage for the Society`s collection of Albert Einstein`s furniture. Future programs include important archeological investigation of the site, as well as educational programs for visitors. The site was used during the Revolutionary War and is one of the last surviving farms in the Princeton area, which has become heavily suburbanized.

Zadar National Museum is undertaking repairs/restoration of historic sites damaged during the conflict that plagued Croatia. The grant will go toward the repair of a historic 16th-century clock tower on the northern part of the main square in Zadar. The square, called Narodni Trg, is the center of public life and dates back to the early Renaissance.
