The best things to do in Liverpool

Let’s look at a few of the attractions that no visitor to the city can afford to miss.

As cities go, Liverpool punches well above its weight when it comes to tourist appeal. Every year, countless tourists from all around the world flock to the city, and for good reason: it’s a place that offers a unique history and culture, and one that can be thoroughly explored over the course of a long weekend.

Let’s look at a few of the attractions that no visitor to the city can afford to miss.

Take a stroll around the docks
Liverpool wouldn’t be Liverpool were it not for the docks. The city has grown up around sea trade, helping to bring goods and people back and forth across the Irish Sea for centuries. Tours of the Old Docks are held by National Museums Liverpool: they’re on every Wednesday and Friday, and every other Thursday and Saturday. Check times and book in advance to avoid disappointment!

Visit Anfield, the pride of Liverpool
Liverpool fans aren’t just based in Merseyside: they come from all across the country, and beyond. Part of what makes the club special is the ground, Anfield, which over the years has witnessed some of the most spectacular moments in the history of football. From Michael Thomas’ last-gasp strike in 1989, to Steven Gerrard’s unforgettable winner against Olympiakos in 2004.

Guided stadium tours, and a trip around the club museum, can be had for as little as £25. While you’re there, you might also visit the club shop, and pick up a replica shirt as a memento.

Relive the Beatles story
If you’re a fan of history’s most famous musical quartet, then a visit to the only permanent museum dedicated to the Beatles must be considered obligatory. The experience charts the rise of the Fab Four, and their impact on the music industry in the long-term.

As well as the museum itself, of course, there are a number of Beatles-related attractions dotted around the city – including the famous clubs where they first honed their performances.

Enjoy the sun on a rooftop
If you’re visiting the city in the summer, then there are a number of popular places to soak up the pleasant weather. Rooftop bars offer a great way to take in the city from on-high. In most cases, this means paying a premium for high-quality food – but if your budget can stretch to it, this is an expense that’s easily justified.

Become a prisoner
One of the more interesting nights out in Liverpool sees drinkers imprisoned in a speakeasy-style prison. You’ll need to smuggle liquor into Alcotraz: Cell Block Three-Six, in order to enjoy a range of sumptuous prohibition-era cocktails. This is an experience that’s to be found in a number of British cities, and the Liverpool branch meets the standards set elsewhere.
