BERLIN – Overlooking a city district that was once home to pickpockets and back-alley dealings, THE THIEF is back on the scene with the addition of two new suites that are an homage to British design, art and culture. Having already garnered international acclaim for their signature suite, an ode to Sir Peter Blake’s art project “The Oslo Suite”, the crafty crew behind this Design Hotels member has collaborated with two of Britain’s preeminent design aficionados, Lee Broom and Conran. The result is a modern expression of fine English craftsmanship on the canals of Oslo’s Tjuvholmen fjord.
Conceptualized by the tandem efforts of Broom and the UK’s leading design firm Conran, the two suites are located on the 6th and 7th floors of the eight-floor hotel. Taking the names The Brit Suite and The Broom Suite, the two 75-sqm spaces translate the design teams’ unique take on luxury living into the glamorous language of the hotel. Rounding out the aforementioned collaborators, Karina Holmen and the Norwegian interior design group ESKE furnished both suites with handmade objects from the two British designers and a sprinkling of select vintage pieces.
The Brit Suite
Taking its cues from the glitz and glam of London’s Carnaby Street in the swinging sixties, cool blues and subtle slate greys coalesce in the tastefully appointed surroundings. Outfitted with furniture from Content by Conran, a porcelain chandelier is suspended over a cubist coffee table, adding a sleek gleam to the otherwise subdued setting. From the same collection, an Ellis sofa and armchair in petrol wool are flanked by black oak Balance tables. Tasteful accessories are the makings of Pols Potten, Antique Mirror and Original BTC.
The Broom Suite
Lee Broom – a longtime fan of traditional British manufacturing – took the decor reigns of the aptly named suite. He oversaw every step of the design and manufacturing process, taking inspiration from the classic patterns and understated elegance of 1950’s Britain. Using exclusive pieces from his own upholstery line Quilt, the sofa, armchair and footstool use the geometric style and quilting process used by couture houses Chanel and Dior. Iconic imagery of Kate Moss hangs dramatically in the living room area, while Broom’s signature crystal lamps give vintage nods to the 50’s. Knit cushions by Aiayu dot the suite, providing pops of vibrant color.
Located next to the iconic Astrup Fearnley Museum of Modern Art, THE THIEF overlooks the canals of Tjuvholmen and the Oslo fjord, with most of its 118 bespoke rooms offering brilliant waterfront views. The interior of the hotel reflects the innovative spirit of its surroundings: original artwork lines the walls, selected by curator Sune Nordgren, while furniture chosen by Anemone Wille-Vage reflects up-to-the-moment design without sacrificing comfort. Known in the 18th century as “Thief Island” because of its role as a prison islet, the waterfront district of Tjuvholmen is home to one of Scandinavia’s most exciting urban renewal projects, as a thriving center for business, art, and nightlife.
