Academy Bus expands service with Florida acquisition

Academy Bus began serving the Northeast region 40 years ago, and has expanded to markets in Baltimore, Washington D.C. and New England.

HOBOKEN, N.J. – Academy Bus, the nation’s largest privately-owned provider of charter and commuter bus services, acquired select charter bus operations from Horizon Coach Lines in the State of Florida. Service is slated to begin on January 11, 2014.

Academy will now become the largest motor coach provider in the state. The company plans to expand charter services in the state to clients including public school districts, universities, corporations, and airport and cruise transfers.

Academy’s Florida operations will originate from terminals in Miami, West Palm Beach and Jacksonville and service the entire state. More than 300 employees and a fleet of 200 vehicles have been dedicated to fulfill the needs of a burgeoning regional economy.

Academy Bus began serving the Northeast region 40 years ago, and has expanded to markets in Baltimore, Washington D.C. and New England. The company has been recognized for setting standards in ground transportation from Boston to Washington, D.C. – earning its reputation with a combination of excellent customer service and its fleet of well maintained, modern buses.

All of the nearly 300 Horizon Coach Lines employees have been offered the opportunity to work for Academy, with the expectation of more jobs created through forecasted expansions in services.

“The time is right to add Florida service to our national network,” said Academy President Francis Tedesco. “We look forward to providing equipment, service and safety to meet the needs of the recovering Florida economy and robust growth of the cruise and tourism industry.”
