More than 150 passengers and crew have taken to lifeboats after a vessel, believed to be the MV Explorer, started sinking in Antarctic Friday morning (23 November 2007). The passengers and crew abandoned the ship when the vessel hit an unidentified object near the South Shetland Islands.
Currently only the Captain and chief officer remain on board as the cruise ship is listing at 25°.
Falmouth coastguard and US coastguard representatives are assisting rescue operations while Argentinean vessels along with another cruise ship which is near the incident participate in the rescue efforts.
100 passengers and 54 crew were on board the ship but their nationalities are not yet known.
