Roland Geiger, the manager airport services for Lufthansa in Greece, Cyprus and Israel, told a press conference last Thursday that the 48 international carriers which are members of IATA have stated that if the road network linking Athens and Spata is not ready in time for the airport`s opening, none will move there.
The airlines` stance has been relayed to the Government while at a planned October meeting of IATA members, the progress of Attiki highway will be studied and a final decision taken by the carriers.
Geiger said that the airlines are waiting for officials to make good on a promise that the road link will be ready by March 2001, when the airport is due to open. Studies are due to be carried out on the flow of traffic from southern Athens suburbs to Spata – considering that most employees at the current airport will be travelling in that direction – while express bus services are planned.
