The Greek Minister of Culture Mr. Giorgos Voulgarakis visited yesterday (27 August) the archeological site of Ancient Olympia where the local and fire authorities informed him regarding the situation in the site. The minister seeing the extent of the disaster by himself stated, “There is no doubt that Ilia prefecture experienced a huge disaster. There are also damages in the greater region of the archeological site.”
“The forest of the Olympic Academy and the surrounding area were also destroyed. Few trees were also burned near the ancient stadium,” said Mr. Voulgarakis.
“But fortunately there were no other damages in the archeological museum of Olympia, in the other buildings, in the ancient stadium and in the ancient monuments.”
“The restoration of the archeological site will be immediate,” stressed the minister. “We have already discussed the possibility of planting big trees and efforts are already being made so as the area to be quickly restored.”
The minister has asked for the help of the Ministry of Public Order for all the archeological sites in Peloponnese that may be in danger and discussions have already been made for Epidavros and for all the archeological sites.
The Old and New Museum as well as the Archeological site of Ancient Olympia will be open for visitors from Tuesday 28 August to Sunday 02 September between 08.00 am to 17.00 pm as the Ministry of Culture announced.
