easyJet launches new route between Glasgow and Amsterdam

easyJet launches new route between Glasgow and Amsterdam. The low-fares airline will operate a daily flight to Amsterdam’s Schipol Airport. It is expected that the route will be popular with both leisure and business travellers. Just last month the airline announced a new route to Jersey and it is now set to replace one of its four Glasgow-based aircraft with an 180-seat Airbus 320.

easyJet will also include an early morning flight on its Glasgow to London Gatwick route from June 6, providing passengers with greater options on the busy Scotland to London routes. Additionally a fourth daily flight between Glasgow and London Gatwick will be available from this winter. The new routes to Amsterdam and Jersey as well as the additional flights to London Gatwick and investment in the Airbus 320 aircraft, will increase easyJet’s capacity out of Glasgow Airport by around 250,000 seats each year.

Hugh Aitken, easyJet’s Commercial Manager for Scotland, said: "We are delighted to announce this new route for Glasgow. We have listened to customer feedback and there was a demand for Amsterdam as both a business and leisure destination. Amsterdam will be our 15th easyJet route from Glasgow and further demonstrates our commitment to City and the region, by offering passengers a greater choice of destinations at affordable prices."

Today’s news was welcomed by tourism and business leaders who said the new route would increase Glasgow’s connectivity and competitiveness.

Councillor Gordon Matheson, Leader of Glasgow City Council and Chair of Glasgow City Marketing Bureau, said: "This new route will not only increase Glasgow’s global connectivity but will also maximise opportunities to promote the city as a short break destination in Holland. In addition, it will also increase Glasgow’s competitiveness as a conventions, events and meetings destination thanks to the cluster of European and international conference associations based in Amsterdam, The Hague, Brussels and Utrecht, which are all within short travelling distance of Schiphol and onward connection to Glasgow."

Aoife Desmond, Visit Scotland’s International Marketing Manager for Europe added: "The announcement of the Amsterdam to Glasgow route is great news for Glasgow and for Scotland. The Dutch are excellent repeat visitors. The route into Glasgow presents fantastic opportunities for short breaks as well as easy access to the West Coast for those looking to explore Scotland further."

Francois Bourienne, Commercial Director at Glasgow Airport, said: "The re-introduction of easyJet’s Amsterdam service is more welcome news from the airline, which over the course of the past two months has steadily increased its capacity at Glasgow Airport. In March it announced a new route to Jersey and improved flight times on its Glasgow-London Gatwick service and this latest decision will ensure Amsterdam remains one of our most popular business and leisure destinations."
