The northern Greek prefecture of Pieria<.> plans to spend up big on its travel industry this year, with a total of 153 million drachmas allocated to its participation in all major tourism exhibitions set to take place in 2000.

Pieria`s tourism promotion authority has decided to take part in the fairs of Utrecht and Paris this year while it will continue to feature at those organised in other European cities.

At 12 of the fairs, the authority will participate as a co-exhibitor together with the region of central Macedonia while Pieria will go it alone at London`s World Travel Market and at Bucharest`s event along with Greece`s own Philoxenia and Tourist Panorama.

Of the 153 million drachmas, the Hellenic Tourism Organisation (EOT) will provide 70 million drachmas, the local authority 40 million drachmas while the remainder will come from Pieria municipalities and tourism entrepreneurs.

The tourism authority is also interested in attracting more domestic visitors this year and has launched a study to determine the best possible form of promotion within Greece, that is to be co-funded by EOT.
