Tunisair jet crashed in the sea off the Sicilian coast on Saturday, killing 19 people with 20 surviving, according to The latest information.

The Tunisair jet ATR-72 operated by Tunisair`s charter arm, Tuninter, carrying 39 passengers went down 16 km off Sicily`s Cape Gallo on the island`s north coast near Palermo`s Falcone-Borsellino airport.

The passengers were all Italian tourists on their way from Bari in south-eastern Italy to the Tunisian island of Djerba, a popular holiday resort.

Officials said the plane had passed safety checks in Italy. The pilot had contacted Rome airport aviation officials just after 3 p.m. reporting engine trouble and asked permission to make an emergency landing in Palermo. Sixteen minutes later, the pilot told tower officials: We`re ditching in the sea,

Many of the survivors were reported to be in shock. Terrorism has been ruled out as a possible cause of the crash.
