New record high at Edinburgh Airport for february passenger numbers

811,804 passengers used Edinburgh airport in February 2017, making it the busiest ever February (February 2016 was the next busiest February despite it being a leap year).

Edinburgh Airport has announced February’s passenger numbers showing 811,804 people passed through the airport last month, making it the busiest February ever at a Scottish airport.

This 5.4 per cent increase, which includes a 13.6 % jump in international passengers, follows on from the recent confirmation that Edinburgh Airport is officially the UK’s fastest growing airport in terms of international passengers.

Welcoming February’s passenger figures Gordon Dewar, Edinburgh Airport’s Chief Executive, said: “Once again our passenger numbers have broken a new record. This is further proof that the airport is continuing to service the growing demand for what is without doubt one of Europe’s leading cities.

“As we grow we deliver greater international connectivity for this city and for Scotland – and the benefits of our growth are felt well beyond this airport.

“The airport is engaged in the second stage of public consultation of an Airspace Change Programme which is focused on giving our neighbouring communities a say on how we grow while ensuring that we continue to support Scotland’s economy in a safe and effective way.

“And while our preferred options would reduce aircraft noise for 25,000 people – as with all major infrastructure expansion plans – we recognise that not everyone agrees with our proposals.

“I actively encourage everyone in Edinburgh, the Lothians, Falkirk and Fife to look at our proposals and give their feedback to the consultation.”

811,804 passengers used Edinburgh airport in February 2017, making it the busiest ever February (February 2016 was the next busiest February despite it being a leap year).

The increase in passengers is due to the increase in international passengers from the new services launched from Edinburgh Airport over the last year with 27 new international services being launched in 2016.

In particular more people travelled with:

  • Jet2.com launched 13 new routes from Edinburgh over 2016. New services to Fuerteventura and Turin launched in December 2016, further boosting passenger numbers. Alicante, Malaga, Tenerife and Geneva were particularly popular.
  • Ryanair increased the number of services it serves year round including Bologna, Bordeaux, Bratislava, Palma and Poznan. Warsaw Modlin launched in November 2016 and more flights operated to Dublin, Barcelona and Copenhagen.
  • Stobart Air carried more passengers to Dublin and the Shannon service which launched in March 2016 further boosted passenger numbers compared to last February.
  • Vueling Alicante and Rome Fiumicino services did not operate in February 2016.
