Statement on US Bill on the EU Emissions Trading Scheme

Leaders of the US House of Representatives Transportation Committee introduced a bill into Congress identifying the EU Emissions Trading Scheme as being a unilateral and extra-territorial act that is inconsistent with long-established international aviation law. The International Air Transport Association (IATA) welcomes this action which recognizes that the International Civil Aviation Organization is the proper forum to address international aviation carbon emissions.

Aviation is a global business that requires global solutions, including on climate change. IATA supports economic measures, including market based measures, to reduce CO2 emissions as part of the aviation industry’s strategy to address climate change.

Aviation is still the only sector that has agreed to a set of global targets to reduce emissions. All parts of the aviation industry have committed to cap net air transport carbon emissions from 2020 and to cut net carbon emissions in half by 2050, compared to 2005.
