As of January 1, 2006, U.S. bus operators traveling into Ontario were required to register in Ontario`s Commercial Vehicle Operator Registration system (CVOR). But thanks to the American Bus Association (ABA) and Motor Coach Canada, the requirement has been waived.

Inspections of U.S.-based coaches by Ontario officers this summer resulted in warnings to American carriers for no CVOR registration. Historically, U.S.-based bus operators were exempt from having to register in CVOR. However, regulatory amendments made in January 1, 2006 and intended for the trucking industry, subjected U.S. bus operators inadvertently to the CVOR requirement.

MCC, on behalf of our alliance partner, the ABA, has been working with government officials in Ontario to end the requirement for U.S.-based bus operators to register in CVOR (website). We are pleased to report that the government agreed with our recommendation that CVOR enforcement action against US bus operators should cease.

Ontario’s Ministry of Transportation issued an enforcement bulletin to this effect on July 18, 2006.
