New US Airways flight connects Mississippi to nation’s capital

US Airways launchES new, daily nonstop service between Mississippi’s capital city, Jackson, and Washington, D.C.’s Reagan National Airport. The route is the only nonstop service linking the State of Mississippi to the nation’s capital.

In addition to access to Washington, D.C.’s downtown airport, the flight will provide customers in the Magnolia State with connections to other destinations throughout the East Coast.

"Our new service will provide a direct link to Washington, D.C. for business, government, military and leisure travelers in Mississippi," said Andrew Nocella, US Airways’ senior vice president, marketing and planning.

Republic Airlines, a US Airways Express carrier, will operate daily service on dual-class 69-passenger Embraer 170 aircraft.

The Department of Transportation granted US Airways temporary authority to operate the new service using two slot exemptions at Reagan National Airport. On March 5, US Airways will petition the Department of Transportation to grant it the authority to fly the route permanently.

The company also announced February and year-to-date 2012 traffic results. Mainline revenue passenger miles (RPMs) for the month were 4.3 billion, up 7.9 percent versus February 2011. Mainline capacity was 5.5 billion available seat miles (ASMs), up 5.8 percent versus February 2011. Mainline passenger load factor was a record 78.3 percent for the month of February, up 1.5 points versus February 2011.

US Airways’ President Scott Kirby said, "Our February consolidated (mainline and Express) passenger revenue per available seat mile (PRASM) increased approximately 7 percent versus the same period last year.

"Mild February weather conditions throughout the country combined with continued outstanding effort from our 32,000 employees resulted in fewer flight cancellations during the month, leading to an all-time record completion factor of 99.7 percent for the Company. Additionally, these results include our best-ever month for on-time performance and four days with zero mainline cancellations."

For the month of February, US Airways’ preliminary on-time performance as reported to the U.S. Department of Transportation was a record 89.3 percent.
