On 10 December 2023 the first Koleje Śląskie trains appeared on the “Pyrzowice Lotnisko” (Katowice Airport) railway station.

10 December 2023 (Sunday) was the first day of the new train timetable. The biggest new position in Koleje Śląskie’s offer is the launch of the S9 Częstochowa – Tarnowskie Góry line, thanks to which passengers and Katowice Airport employees have gained the possibility to reach the airport by another mode of transport: train.

As part of the new timetable which entered into force on 10 December, Koleje Śląskie launched trains on the S9 line. Every day, 20 trains will handle the Częstochowa – Tarnowskie Góry route. The first train entered the “Pyrzowice Lotnisko” (Katowice Airport) station at 1.14 am.

20 trains, 7 days a week

Launch of the connection which goes by Katowice Airport is an immensely important moment from the perspective of the development of train transport in our voivodeship, as well as a complement to Koleje Śląskie’s offer” said Patryk Świrski, the President of the company. “Trains handle the S9 line seven days a week and stop at the following stations and depots: Częstochowa, Częstochowa Raków, Poraj, Myszków, Zawiercie, Poręba, Siewierz, Mierzęcice, Pyrzowice Lotnisko (Katowice Airport), Miasteczko Śląskie Centrum and Tarnowskie Góry. In the future, following the modernisation of the railway infrastructure along the Tarnowskie Góry – Katowice route, it will be possible to launch direct trains connecting Katowice with Katowice Airport. Currently, persons travelling from Katowice must change trains in Zawiercie” adds the President of Koleje Śląskie.

Modern fleet, attractive offer

The S9 line is handled exclusively by 22WEd trains, also known as “Elf 2.” Trains run every 2.5 hours, and the special “Airport tariff” to Katowice Airport from Tarnowskie Góry costs PLN 8.50, PLN 10.40 in case of Zawiercie, and PLN 19.80 in case of Częstochowa. The travel times are, respectively: 17, 22 and 57 minutes.

Katowice Airport passengers and employees will benefit

“Launch of the route by Koleje Śląskie, which goes through Katowice Airport, is an important event. Thus far, Katowice Airport was the only big Polish regional airport which could not be reached by train. Not only Katowice Airport customers, but also the airport’s employees will use the railway station. Katowice Airport is a big work establishment; approx. 4 thousand persons are employed here. By the end of this decade, the number of employees will grow and reach even 7 thousand. We estimate that 8 million passengers will use the airport’s services yearly in 2028. By then, we want to connect air, road and train transport. In four years, we plan to put into service the new central passenger terminal and a multimodal interchange centre. Both objects will be connected with the railway station by a tunnel” said Artur Tomasik, the President of the Board of the Upper Silesian Aviation Group.
