Record-breaking March and 1st Quarter of the year for Katowice Airport

In the third month of 2024, Katowice Airport handled 98,571 passengers on charter flights, handled on behalf of travel agencies.

The Upper Silesian Aviation Group (GTL S.A.) – the company managing Katowice Wojciech Korfanty International Airport in Pyrzowice, Poland – has summarised passenger traffic for the third month and first quarter of 2024.

In March 2024, Katowice Airport served 313,828 passengers, i.e. 37,994 more (+13.8%) than the year before. It was the best third month in the history of the airport; air carriers and tour operators handled 59,263 passengers more (+23.3%) than in 2018, when record-breaking 254,565 travellers flew to and from Katowice Airport.

Wizz Air, Ryanair, LOT Polish Airlines and Air Dolomiti (the airline handles flights for Lufthansa) transported 213 501 passengers on regular flights, i.e. 3 490 fewer (-1.6%) in comparison with the same time in 2023. Most often, passengers chose scheduled flights connecting Katowice Airport with Dortmund, London-Stansted, London-Luton, Athens and Abu Dhabi.

In the third month of 2024, Katowice Airport handled 98,571 passengers on charter flights, handled on behalf of travel agencies, i.e. 40,983 more (+71.2%) than in March 2023. Most popular were holiday flights to Hurghada, Marsa Alam, Sharm El Sheikh, Antalya and Zanzibar.

In thirty-one days of March 2024, Katowice Wojciech Korfanty Airport saw 2 936 aircraft takeoffs and landings, 107 more (+3.8%) than the year before.

From January to the end of March 2024, a total of 925 209 passengers was handled at Katowice Airport; that’s 130 204 passengers more (+16.4%) in comparison with the same time in 2023. The first three months of 2024 were the best in the history of the airport, surpassing the result achieved last year.

628,673 persons travelled on regular flights, 17,748 more (+2.9%) than in 2023. In the first quarter of 2024, regular flights to Dortmund, London-Stansted, London-Luton, Athens and Abu Dhabi were the most popular routes among passengers. 293,109 travellers were served on charter flights, 115 787 more (+65.3%) than during the first three months of 2023. Passengers most often flew on charter flights to Hurghada, Marsa Alam, Sharm El Sheikh, Antalya and Zanzibar. From January to the end of March, 8 216 aircraft takeoffs and landings took place at Katowice Airport, i.e. 599 more (+7.9%) than last year.

“In accordance with our forecasts, the first quarter of 2024 was record-breaking for Katowice Airport. We are also expecting very good results in the upcoming months. In mid-April, Ryanair will expand its network of flights with five new routes, namely: Alicante, Bari, Malta, Rome-Fiumicino and Zadar. The beginning of the high charter season is round the corner; it will commence at the beginning of May. Currently, we expect to conclude 2024 with over 6M handled passengers,” said Artur Tomasik, the President of the Board of the Upper Silesian Aviation Group (GTL S.A.)

Katowice Airport is among the biggest regional airports in Poland. In 2023, record-breaking 5.6M passengers flew via its network of flights. The forecast for 2024 indicates that over 6M travellers will be handled; it will be the best result in the history of Katowice Airport. Katowice Wojciech Korfanty Airport is the country leader in the area of charter flights, and one of the biggest cargo airports in Poland.
