Katowice Airport

Record-breaking first month of the year at Katowice Wojciech Korfanty International Airport.

The Upper Silesian Aviation Group (GTL SA) – the company managing Katowice Wojciech Korfanty International Airport in Pyrzowice, Poland – has summarised passenger traffic for the first month of 2024.

In January, 307 521 passengers were handled at Katowice Airport, i.e. 40 443 more (+15.1%) in comparison with the same time period in 2023. It was the best first month in the history of the airport; 17 183 passengers more (+5.9%) were handled in comparison with the record-breaking January 2020 before the coronavirus pandemic, when 290 338 passengers were served on all flights.

Wizz Air, Ryanair, LOT Polish Airlines and Air Dolomiti/Lufthansa noted 211 475 persons on regular flights, i.e. 9 265 more (+4.6%) than the year before. Passengers most often chose scheduled flights connecting Katowice Airport with Dortmund, London-Stansted, London-Luton, Abu Dhabi, and Athens.

In January 2024, 95 229 passengers were served on charter flights, operated on behalf of travel agencies and tour operators, i.e. 33 525 more (+54.3%) in comparison with the first month of 2023. In January, most popular were charter flights from Katowice Airport to Hurghada, Marsa Alam, Sharm El Sheikh, Zanzibar, and Antalya.

In the first month of 2024, 2 692 aircraft takeoffs and landings were noted, 203 more (+8.2%) in comparison with January 2023.

“2024 began well at Katowice Airport. For the first time in the history of the airport, we noted more than 300,000 passengers in January. The forecast for this year estimates that record-breaking approx. 6 million passengers will travel via the Katowice Airport network of flights. We expect to handle over 8 million travellers by the end of this decade. Consequently, we commenced the realisation of an investment program for 2024-2028; its most crucial element is the construction of a central passenger terminal. Thanks to the new building, we will be able to comfortably handle the forecast growing number of passengers,” said Artur Tomasik, the President of the Board of the Upper Silesian Aviation Group (GTL SA).
