US Airways employees give back during the holidays

While US Airways Group, Inc. has been busy getting customers home for the holidays, employees have still found time to give back to their community. US Airways kicked off the holidays with a toy drive to benefit the Salvation Army in the airline’s hub and focus cities of Boston, Charlotte, Las Vegas, New York, Philadelphia, Phoenix, Pittsburgh, Washington, D.C. and Winston-Salem, N.C.

The toy drive began after Thanksgiving and concluded Dec. 17. Employees were encouraged to select a tag from a tree with the holiday wishes of a child. Employees collected gifts for more than 1,500 children across the country, a record number for the company.

Throughout December, the Do Crew, US Airways’ employee volunteer corps, logged countless hours with nonprofit organizations located in hub and focus cities. Benefactors included local Salvation Army chapters in Boston, Charlotte, Las Vegas, Phoenix, Pittsburgh and Winston-Salem, N.C. In addition, employees in Washington, D.C. laid wreaths at Arlington National Cemetery with Wreaths Across America. Employees also served the homeless at St. Vincent de Paul in Phoenix and Light of Life in Pittsburgh.

"We are all very fortunate to be able to give back to our local communities," said Julie Coleman, Director of Community Relations. "US Airways is proud of our commitment to improving the lives of individuals in the communities we serve."

Employees will continue these efforts year round. Each Do Crew chapter will volunteer in their local community at least one time each month and a summer food drive will be conducted in the airline’s hub and focus cities to benefit local food banks.

Employees throughout the system are encouraged to take part in Destination: Serve the Nations, a year long initiative which encourages all employees to give back by volunteering. Other initiatives include quarterly blood drives, Sweet Delights Take Flight -an annual recognition of veterans – and Puppies In Flight, a program where the Do Crew transports assistance dogs.
