In response to India’s rapidly growing hotel industry, the addition of Mumbai to the HotelBenchmark Survey by Deloitte was announced. Not only is Mumbai the first Indian market to be included in our monthly hotel performance results, but this is also the first time that monthly performance on Mumbai has ever been available.

Mumbai is now the 35th city tracked on the Asia Pacific edition of the HotelBenchmark Survey. The survey contains the largest independent source of hotel performance data in the region, tracking the monthly rate and occupancy performance of over 1,000 hotels throughout North-East Asia, South-East Asia, South Asia and Oceania.

Commenting on the launch, Julia Felton, Executive Director of HotelBenchmark at Deloitte said: “Given the level of investment and interest in India we are delighted to be able to provide the industry with the first ever monthly reports on hotel performance trends. Mumbai is just the first of many markets we plan to report on in India. As the number of participants grow we intend to develop a separate in depth country survey to help the industry better understand the dynamics of this changing market.”

Year-to-June 2004 results indicate Mumbai is performing well. A 27 percent increase in revenue per available room (revPAR) was driven almost entirely by occupancy growth due to increased arrivals to India. A more detailed look at Mumbai’s hotel performance will be featured in the next issue of ‘In the Know’, our fortnightly e-newsletter.
