Launch of OPEN DAYS 2008: The annual flagship event of Europe’s Regional Policy

The sixth annual OPEN DAYS – European Week of Regions and Cities, organized by the European Commission and EU Committee of the Regions, takes place 6-9 October. Some 7,400 European, national and regional policy- makers , experts and representatives of banking, business and civil society will participate in 145 seminars and other events in Brussels…

The 6th annual OPEN DAYS – European Week of Regions and Cities, organized by the European Commission and EU Committee of the Regions, took place 6-9 October. Some 7,400 European, national and regional policy- makers, experts and representatives of banking, business and civil society participated in 145 seminars and other events in Brussels.

The first day of the event was dedicated to tourism. European Day of Tourism included two seminars: the first about Eu Funding Opportunities For Tourism, and the second analyzing the networking in Tourism.

The first part of the first  seminar presented different Eu Programmes of Funding and their contribution in Tourism. Also, Best practices presented by leaders, such as the creation of Sustainable Tourism Destinations, CREST, a project partly financed by Eu Interreg IIIB and North Sea Programme, by Mrs Linda Carlsson, and the STREAM project which is aiming to help small entrepreneur to manage their staff.

During the 2nd part was presented the Agricultural Fund for Rural Development, analyzing the rural development policy, which includes the tourism development. The Fund also includes the LEADER project, which helps in developing farm tourism. Mr Falter Cristiane presented the Fisheries Fund and Mr Andras Demeter the project “Natura 2000”. Best practices presented by Project leaders,  Mr Klaus Erlich presents “Red Andaluza de Alojamientos Rurales”, and Mr Geunter Salchner presented “Transnational Education for Cuiding and Management for Regional Museums – Verein Regionalentwicklung Ausserfem”.

The second seminar focused on networking in Tourism. Chairman was Mr Francesco Ianiello, head of Tourism Unit. The issue of supporting networking activities in Tourism through Eu Financial instruments presented by Jean – Michel Courades, as well as  “tourism networking in practice – the ERA- NET programme”  by Mr Francesca Tudini. Representative of different areas participating in EDEN project signed a Memoradum of Understanding.

Simultaneously, under the OPEN DAYS banne, 230 local events is an opportunity to exchange knowledge and experience on job creation, the debate on Europe’s future Cohesion Policy.

Regional Policy Commissioner Danuta Hubner said: “This OPEN DAYS is testimony to the ongoing rich dialogue between Europe’s institutions, regional and local authorities, town and city councils, associations, universities, banks and investors. We share the same goals: we want to create the best conditions for investment, jobs and growth, to deliver a better quality of life and greater prosperity for EU’s 500 million citizens. Our regions and cities are key implementing the policies to achieve these objectives” .

Committee of the Regions (CoR) President Luc den Brande added: “Regions and cities are more important than ever in political terms. In troubled times they can provide leadership and solutions. They deliver more than 66% of public investment in the EU; they are key actors in innovation, research and education. The European Week of Regions and Cities and the CoR plenary, taking place in parallel, are a great opportunity to share best practice on regional and urban development.”
