Navarino Natura Hall by Hellenic Postbank opens doors in Costa Navarino

The environmental exhibition centre further enhances the destination’s dedication to education, environment and art ΧX June 2011. Costa Navarino, the prime sustainable destination located in the Greek region of Messinia in the southwest Peloponnese, has welcomed the first visitors of Navarino Natura Hall by Hellenic Postbank. Also, the results of the open competition for the Navarino Natura Art Award have been announced. The winner is Barbara Fluxa with her work “Future Testimony”.

Navarino Natura Hall by Hellenic Postbank provides a unique insight into the rich and diverse environment of Messinia, with interactive features to let visitors ‘experience’ the Messinian flora and fauna and inspirational content that also highlight Costa Navarino’s commitment to environmental responsibility. The centre allows visitors, university students, local schools and the public to familiarise themselves with environmental protection issues. It is also committed to encouraging participation in the global effort to tackle climate change, while presenting the results of the research programs being carried out at Navarino Environmental Observatory (NEO).

The centre is the result of a collaboration between the University of Stockholm, the Academy of Athens, the Hellenic Ornithological Society (the Greek counterpart of the RSPB), the Hellenic Marine Environment Protection Association (HELMEPA) and Navarino Foundation, with the support of the Hellenic Postbank, and was designed by the NGO Organization Earth and the company K&G.

Navarino Natura Art Award 2011
The centre will also host the winning entry of the Navarino Natura Art Award 2011, announced today as Barbara Fluxa from Spain.

Art is a very important part of the experience at Costa Navarino. A significant art collection with works from the 17th – 19th centuries together with more contemporary pieces is to be found at Navarino Dunes. This emphasis that has been given to Art is reflected also at the Navarino Natura Hall by Hellenic Postbank. An exhibition of the winner of the Navarino Natura Art Award will be held each year in the permanent exhibition space ‘Natura Art’. The award has been established through the collaboration of Kalfayan Galleries (Athens-Thessaloniki), the NGO Organization Earth and Navarino Foundation. This international annual award aspires to become a dynamic platform which will address contemporary environmental themes through art.

The theme of this year’s award was ‘Green Art and Nature’, and artists were invited to submit video artworks/video installations which explored the harmonious co-existence of art and nature.
Amongst several entries from around the world, including Spain, Thailand, Brazil, Chile, Japan, Switzerland, USA, Austria, France and Greece, the winner of the Navarino Natura Art Award 2011 was Barbara Fluxa’s six screen film entitled ‘Future Testimony’ (pictured below).

The Selection Committee was comprised of the following members: Arsen Kalfayan, Kalfayan Galleries (President of the Committee); Prof. Christos Zerefos, Member of the Academy of Athens and the NEO Steering Committee; Prof. Stefan Nordlund, University of Stockholm and President of the NEO Steering Committee; Vangelis Ioakimidis, Director of the Thessaloniki Museum of Photography and Costantza Sbokou –  Constantakopoulou, Architect, TEMES.
