Starwood UAE joins global initiative “Earth Hour 2009”

Eighteen (18) Starwood Hotels and Resorts in United Arab Emirates will be counting down to Earth Hour 2009, a global environment event organized by the World Wildlife Fund (WWF) on 28 March 2009. In a joint effort to send a strong message in the fight against climate change and caring for the planet, the hotels will join hands with millions others around the world and pledge to switch off their lights from 8.30PM to 9.30PM.
 
Participating hotels in the UAE include Sheraton Dubai Creek Hotel & Towers, Sheraton Jumeirah Beach Resort & Towers, Sheraton Deira Hotel, Le Meridien Dubai, Le Royal Meridien Beach Resort & Spa Dubai, Grosvenor House Dubai, Le Meridien Mina Seyahi Beach Resort & Marina, Westin Dubai Mina Seyahi Beach Resort & Marina, Four Points by Sheraton Bur Dubai, Four Points by Sheraton DownTown, Four Points by Sheraton Sheikh Zayed Road, Al Sondos Suites by Le Meridien, Dar Al Sondos Apartments by Le Meridien in Dubai; Le Meridien Al Aqah in Fujairah and in Abu Dhabi, Sheraton Abu Dhabi Hotel & Resort, Sheraton Khalidiya Hotel, Le Royal Meridien Abu Dhabi and Le Meridien Abu Dhabi.

Cindy Yoong, Area Director of Public Relations for Starwood Hotels & Resorts in the UAE said, “It is our commitment to other fellow beings, the world we live in, and most importantly, to our associates and customers that we move towards proactive engagement in caring for our environment. All the hotels will observe Earth Hour by taking energy-saving measures for one full hour further underscoring Starwood Hotels & Resorts’ commitment to environmental sustainability.”

The 18 hotels in UAE form part of the 100 already signed up from the Europe, Africa and Middle East division of the hotel company. Starwood affirms the need for unity towards making a green statement on energy conservation and with that, the respective hotels are taking matters in their hands to organize many green activities leading up to Earth Hour.

Additionally, hundreds more Starwood hotels around the world are coordinating supplementary awareness events such as walk-a-thons in their local communities, public candlelight unplugged concerts and receptions for guests featuring signature green cocktails.

Across its’ entire portfolio, Starwood is rolling out initiatives that aim to conserve energy and water, reduce waste and enhance indoor environmental quality for Starwood guests and associates alike.
