VisitEngland launches first Green Map of London at the Savoy

In these environmentally-conscious times, we should all be leading greener lives – but while cutting our carbon footprint might be the right thing to do, it doesn’t always feel like much fun.  So wouldn’t it be great if some of the most enjoyable things in life – a sexy weekend away, slap-up lunches, shopping sprees, a swanky cocktail or two – came with an eco-friendly tag?

Now, thanks to a new map from VisitEngland, greentraveller.co.uk and headline sponsor Fairmont Hotels & Resorts, with the support of VisitLondon, it’s possible to do all these things, safe in the knowledge that every pound you spend is going towards businesses run along ethical lines. Green London brings together restaurants, hotels, cafes and attractions, many approved by the Green Tourism Business Scheme, all listed on a handy, pocket-sized map.

“Sustainable tourism is an increasingly integral part of our industry,” says James Berresford, VisitEngland Chief Executive “and we are delighted to be launching Green London, the first map to exclusively highlight green businesses around the capital.”

Created with Richard Hammond, Chief Executive and Founder ofgreentraveller.co.uk, the map features sustainable places to eat, sleep, shop and, have fun and also contains useful information on getting around the capital and how to discover some of the city’s lesser-known attractions. The map will be downloadable from Visit England’s website and available free at eight Tourist Information Centres in and around London including the Britain and London Visitor Centre on 1 Regent Street.

The ethos of the map is to illustrate that a ‘green’ weekend in London is accessible and affordable for all visitors, regardless of budget. “Green London makes it easy for travellers to discover all that our amazing capital city has to offer,” says James Berresford, “mixing luxury brands such as The Savoy with smaller, innovative businesses that run on ethical principles and specialise in offering locally-sourced and Fairtrade goods.”

The map will launch in the first-ever Climate Week, on the 22nd March at one of London’s most iconic hotels, The Savoy, a Fairmont Managed Hotel. “The Savoy has made a substantial investment to achieve our aim of being the most sustainable luxury hotel in London,” says Debra Patterson, Environmental Ambassador for The Savoy. “This map represents a wonderful opportunity to share with our guests the very best initiatives taking place in the hotel and throughout the capital and we are delighted to support it.”

Livia Firth, owner of Eco Age said: "There is no excuse anymore not to be aware of how to be more environmentally friendly in London or not to know where to shop for your eco lifestyle! This guide is a treasure!"
