Slaughter responds to Homeland Security Secretary statement on border policies

Rep. Louise M. Slaughter, Chairwoman of the House Rules Committee, issued the following statement after Department of Homeland Security Secretary Michael Chertoff told critics of DHS’s border policies to “grow up”.

“I find it insulting that Secretary Chertoff dismisses critics of this ill-conceived plan for border crossing documents by telling them ‘to grow up’,” said Rep. Slaughter. “Congress has signaled its intent to protect and promote trade and travel across the borders. The Department of Homeland Security’s disregard for the livelihoods and economies of border communities is shameful, especially as the whole nation faces an economic decline.”

“With Secretary Chertoff and the current Administration entrenched in its misguided ways, it is often difficult to steer them on the right course – but it is a fight worth having and one that I will continue to avow. It is not only important to those who live near the northern border, but also to the immensely fragile economy of our nation and working families across the country.”
