Security is a top priority for Egypt, Chairman of the Egyptian Tourism Promotion Authority Ahmed al-Khadem told a delegation of Italian travel agents currently visiting Sharm el- Sheikh.
After the October 7 Taba bombings that killed tens and injured scores of tourists, security measures in tourist places all across the country have been reviewed and intensified to avoid all drawbacks of the past and provide tourists with the best level of protection, he said.
The delegation that includes up to 200 Italian travel agents in addition to tourism editors covered ways to increase Italian tourist traffic to Egypt.
Italy is already Egypt`s number one tourist market for the period starting from January till September up to 825,000 Italian tourists visited Egypt, with an increase of 42% in comparison with the same period last year, Khadem said.
He expected the number to increase to one million by the end of the current year.
There has only been a 5% to 7% drop in the number of tourists visiting Egypt since the attack in Taba, said the Egyptian official noting that the area mostly affected by the drop was Taba and Nuweiba.
