American Airlines to launch service between Los Angeles and Tokyo Haneda in February 2016

Customers can book travel on the new route starting Sunday.

FORT WORTH, TEXAS – American Airlines will offer customers daily, year-round, nonstop service to Tokyo’s Haneda Airport (HND) from its trans-Pacific gateway at Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) beginning Feb. 11, 2016. Customers can book travel on the new route starting Sunday, Nov. 8. American recently secured takeoff and landing time slots at Haneda Airport from the Japanese aviation authorities, which will allow the commencement of the flight.

“It’s important for our customers to have direct access to Tokyo Haneda, and we’ll be proud to serve this key airport from Los Angeles,” said Andrew Nocella, American’s chief marketing officer. “This new flight is a fantastic addition to our growing network to Asia and a great complement to our existing service to Tokyo Narita. We thank the Japanese authorities for working with us to find appropriate slot times, and the U.S. Department of Transportation and the State Department for facilitating the process and recognizing the importance of American offering year-round service to Haneda.”

The LAX-HND flight will be operated with American’s state-of-art Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner. Arranged in a two-class cabin configuration, American’s 787-8 features 28 fully lie-flat Business Class seats, 48 Main Cabin Extra seats and 150 Main Cabin seats. The aircraft is equipped with satellite Wi-Fi to keep customers connected while traveling internationally. Every seat features HD Panasonic touchscreen monitors with a variety of entertainment options, as well as universal AC power outlets and a USB jack.

American’s new Los Angeles-Haneda service will be operated as part of the airline’s joint business with fellow oneworld member Japan Airlines. Through oneworld member airlines and their affiliates, American’s customers have access to nearly 150 destinations within Asia.

American has served Los Angeles for more than 80 years. With nearly 200 daily departures operated by the youngest fleet among global network carriers in the U.S. and unmatched premium services on the ground, American has a rich history as the premier airline at LAX with the most domestic and international destinations. In addition to Haneda, American has also announced new trans-Pacific service from LAX to Sydney, beginning Dec. 17.

American Airlines customers gain new non-stop routes to Cancun
American Airlines will also offer new access to Cancun, Mexico – one of Mexico’s most popular destinations – when it adds new service from four U.S. cities in 2016. The new seasonal service to Cancun International Airport (CUN) will operate on Saturdays from Raleigh-Durham International Airport (RDU), Pittsburgh International Airport (PIT), Nashville International Airport (BNA) and Kansas City International Airport (MCI). We expect that customers may begin booking flights for these new routes in mid-November once governmental approvals have been obtained, and service will start on March 5, 2016.

“The addition of these four new routes gives our customers 12 locations to fly non-stop to Cancun,” said Art Torno, senior vice president – International and Cargo. “As the premier carrier to Mexico, the Caribbean and Latin America with flights to 85 destinations, these additions highlight our commitment to providing our customers with a network that is second to none.”

In August, American announced plans to provide customers a more seamless experience with its Airbus 319 fleet. A319s will be retrofitted with AC power ports at every seat and new overhead bins with increased storage for carryon bags. When complete, all A319s will be configured with 128 seats with 8 First Class seats and 18 Main Cabin Extra seats.

American is in the midst of more than $2 billion in planned improvements to give customers a superior travel experience around the world. These capital investments include fully lie-flat seats; international Wi-Fi; more in-flight entertainment options and power outlets; a new, modern design for Admirals Club lounges worldwide; and an upgraded assortment of complimentary healthy food, cocktails and more. American is taking delivery of more than 100 new aircraft this year, giving it the youngest fleet of any U.S.-based network carrier. Orders include the Airbus A320 and A320neo family, A350-900s, Boeing 737 MAX, 777-300ERs and 787s, which will make American’s fleet even younger, more modern and fuel efficient.
