A tidal wave reported to be 10-15 feet high, struck the southern and eastern coastal areas of Sri Lanka early this morning.
The Sri Lanka Tourist Board and Industry representatives are taking all necessary steps to provide alternate accommodation for visitors affected by flooding, in the aftermath of the tidal waves affecting the South Asian Region.
Information regarding tourists in the Island’s coastal belt is being provided around the clock on the Hotline 94-112-437061.
A few hotels have been affected by flooding and guests have been evacuated for safety reasons.
The Sri Lanka Tourist Board is keeping all foreign missions based in Colombo, fully informed to facilitate speedy responses to enquiries on the whereabouts of foreign guests.
Sri Lanka also has an influx of tourists from neighbouring countries affected by the tidal waves, for emergency accommodation. Colombo is expected to have a problem with accommodation in the next 48 hours and a request is being made to all arriving passengers without personal accommodation to refrain from visiting the Island.
Relatives and friends of tourists traveling in Sri Lanka are also advised to contact their respective Embassies and High Commissions.
The Sri Lanka Tourist Board will provide regular updates on developments.
