With the first flight of the Emirates Airbus A380 from Dubai to Munich, airberlin technik expands its range of capability to include the double-deck aircraft from the European manufacturer. In future, the EASA Part 145 certified maintenance company will perform the transit check every day while the aircraft is on the ground at the Bavarian capital city. At the Munich location, airberlin technik runs a hangar with 12,000 square metres of floor area, with space for up to six narrow-body aircraft or three wide-body aircraft, and employs 270 staff.
airberlin technik already provides complete line maintenance to Emirates in Germany at Dusseldorf, Hamburg, Frankfurt and also Munich. This includes maintenance contracts for the aircraft types Airbus A330, A340, A380 and also Boeing 777.
airberlin technik GmbH (abt) is the aviation technology division within the airberlin group and the main provider of MRO services for the group’s aircraft. The company has around 1,800 employees at 16 locations throughout Germany and in other countries and provides almost all technical aviation services. Its customers include not only the airberlin group, but also a steadily growing number of major German and international airlines. The company operates under licence from the LBA (German Federal Aviation Office) and has received EASA Part 145 certification. The most recent milestone in the company’s history is the merger of AB aviation technology operations under the umbrella of airberlin technik GmbH on 1st April 2011. Construction work on a new maintenance hangar on the site of the future BER airport began on 21st March 2011. Two thirds of this facility will be utilised by airberlin and one third by Germania. The hangar, covering an area of more than 12,000 m2, will be completed by the time that BER opens on 3rd June 2012.
